Margot Robbie’s journey from flop to Hollywood’s Queen with billion-dollar success and buzzworthy movies.

Margot Robbie is riding high on the success of Barbie this awards season, having scooped the Golden Globe for cinematic and box office achievement last Sunday night.

The Greta Gerwig-directed comedy amassed an incredible $1.4billion at the box office globally, making it the highest grossing film in Warner Bros history.

Her winning streak has also continued with the success of Saltburn (2023), which was also produced by Margot’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment.

The film has gone viral online for its inclusion of several disturbing scenes, as well as for reviving Sophie Ellis-Bextor‘s hit song Murder On The Dancefloor onto international charts for the first time in 2023 years.

The film was nominated for several awards at the Golden Globes – including Best Actor for Barry Keough, who plays twisted Oliver Quick in the movie – and is no doubt set to scoop several BAFTAs at the annual British ceremony next month.

Barbie and Saltburn come as a saving grace for Margot, 33, who was once known as a Hollywood flop-magnet after she starred in a string of major box office duds.

Despite breaking into Hollywood with the wildly successful 2013 film Wolf of Wall Street, Margot’s luck quickly ran out thanks to the disappointing outcome of her 2016 movie The Legend of Tarzan.

The flick, which was the first live-action Tarzan movie since 1998, grossed US$356.7 million worldwide.

The film had a production budget of $180 million, meaning that it would have had to make at least $400 million to be profitable when the marketing budget was taken into account.

Margot is also enjoying the success of Saltburn (2023), which was produced by her production company LuckyChap Entertainment. (Pictured at the Saltburn premiere in Los Angeles)

The Legend of Tarzan is generally remembered as a costly misfire, scoring an approval rating of just 35% with an average rating of 5.1/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Margot’s 2020 film Birds Of Prey meanwhile failed to impress after it fell below projections at the box office.

The DC Comics movie was also produced by Margot’s production company LuckyChap entertainment, and was a sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad focusing on the character of Harley Quinn.

With a production budget of US$84.5million, Birds of Prey was expected to open to around US$50million, but instead brought in just US$33.3million in American theatres.

It was the same story overseas, where Birds of Prey grossed an estimated US$48million from 78 international markets, lifting the total weekend gross to about US$81million.

Many have speculated that the Coronavirus pandemic played a part in the disappointing outcome, while others suggest the film’s R-rating may have excluded young fans of the popular character Harley Quinn.

Margot’s run of bad luck continued in 2022 when she starred in two box office flops- Amsterdam and Babylon.

Amsterdam, directed by David O. Russell, followed the story of a little-known attempted coup against the US government.

The dark comedy grossed just US$32 million despite costing US$80 million, with estimated losses for the studio of over US$100 million.

The film was described by critics as overambitious and tonally inconsistent, scoring an approval rating of just 32% on with an average rating of 5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Then came Babylon, one of Margot’s most notorious box office bombs.

Despite its all-star cast including Brad Pitt, The Damien Chazelle-directed movie failed to make up its US$80 million budget, grossing just US$63 million.

Babylon had initially generated Oscar buzz, but its prospects were quashed thanks to its terrible commercial performance.

But Margot has since made up for her former disasters and then some, thanks to the incredible success of Barbie.

The film had a US$145m and amassed an eye-popping US$1.4bn at the global box office and scored an 88% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Saltburn was nominated for several awards at the Golden Globes – including Best Actor for Barry Keough (pictured with Margot), who plays twisted Oliver Quick in the movie – and is no doubt set to scoop several BAFTAs at the annual British ceremony next month

Margot, who is the producer and titular star of the popular flick, told Variety she was shocked at the online cultural impact the movies had on their opening weekend.

The success of the movie made $50million for Robbie and stands to leave her as one of the richest women in Hollywood for her role as star and producer.

Robbie took home the whopping pay check in salary and box office bonus, having also produced the film through LuckyChap Entertainment.

LuckyChap – which Robbie founded in 2014 with husband Tom Ackerley, and friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr – has also produced Promising Young Woman, Birds of Prey and series Maid.

Saltburn meanwhile grossed US$20.6million worldwide, although the budget for the film has not been made public.

The film has however earned a solid critical reception, scoring a 71% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been steaming hit for on Amazon Prime Video.
