Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk rematch could see radical rule change

Mauricio Sulaiman wants there to be six judges scoring the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk rematch.

The WBC president campaigned for the radical rule change ahead of Fury and Usyk’s inaugural encounter.

But the proposition was met with stark resistance from rival sanctioning bodies and organisers, meaning the traditional three judges took their places at ringside.

However, the WBC – who claim the extra three judges will lessen the possibility of a controversial decision – isn’t willing to give up that easily.

Undeterred by the backlash, Sulaiman has doubled down on his stance ahead of Fury and Usyk’s second fight.

“I will campaign for the WBC fights to those who are eligible, and we are going to start doing it,” Sulaiman told Casino Reviews.

“It came down to the other organisations and the promoters not supporting the idea so we will do it as usual in the WBC fights.

“We have done a few in Mexico and will continue doing so in WBC fights and we will monitor it and see how things go.

“It was a very close fight. It came down to the 11th round and it was scored in favour of Oleksandr Usyk by two judges, one of them in Mike Fitzgerald and Mike Metcalfe (Craig Metcalfe) scored it in favour of Tyson Fury.

“So, if Metcalfe scored it for Usyk rather than Fury it would’ve been a unanimous decision for Usyk.

“If Fitzgerald had scored it to Fury then he would’ve won the fight so the rounds were very close, that one in particular. A huge left hand at the end of the round by Usyk was a statement.

“Scoring is subjective, it’s a complicated task but I believe a split decision win for Usyk is more than fair and acceptable.

“Our position is to always have the best possibilities to avoid a controversy and that’s why we wanted six judges.”

Usyk defeated Fury split decision when they fought for the first time on May 18.

Judge Manuel Oliver Palomo scored the fight 115-112 in favour of Usyk, while Mike Fitzgerald gave it to Usyk by a narrow 114-113 margin.

The third judge, Craig Metcalfe, had it the other way with a scorecard of 114-113 Fury.

They are now set to run it back on December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia after Fury activated the two-way rematch clause in their contract.
