Michael Chandler offered alternative UFC fight as he sets Conor McGregor deadline to salvage clash

Michael Chandler claims he has been offered a fight with a UFC champion following the collapse of his Conor McGregor bout.

McGregor and Chandler were scheduled to meet on June 29 in the UFC 303 main event, however, their welterweight fight was called off after the Irishman suffered a broken toe in sparring.

Chandler has been waiting patiently for his opportunity to face McGregor since they squared off as coaches in The Ultimate Fighter reality television show last year.

The 38-year-old MMA star hasn’t fought since losing to Dustin Poirier in November 2022 and is growing tired of watching the twilight of his career slip away from him.

As a result, he has set McGregor a deadline of September to accept the fight otherwise he will move on to an alternative clash with UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday, he wrote: “I’ve been offered @MAKHACHEVMMA in October – but if @TheNotoriousMMA little pinky toe is ready by Sept, let’s do sphere.

“Biggest sporting event in history of sports!!!! @RiyadhSeason #ufc30.”

The UFC is partnering with Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season for the blockbuster UFC 306 event at the Sphere in Las Vegas on September 14.

UFC president Dana White claims the company have already pumped $16 million (£12.6m) into the show and they are expected to spend even more on booking elite talent for the card.

McGregor vs Chandler would serve as the perfect feature attraction for the showpiece event but it is unclear whether that fight could be made in that timescale.

White recently declared that McGregor won’t return to action in August, September or October.

But the man himself said he would be ready to compete in two months’ time.

“August or September I’d love,” he told Severe MMA when asked for a potential return date two weeks ago.

“You know the way it is. I’m in recovery mode. It happened three weeks ago to the day. And I’m still here rocking around in the slippers.

“They are not bad slippers, thankfully. They are cosy enough, but I can’t get into a shoe yet.”

McGregor has since ditched the slippers and is back kicking again.

A now-deleted post on X showed McGregor throwing a high kick with the injured foot in sparring.
