Barbie’ has become the highest-grossing movie of 2023 a month after it was released in cinemas.
The blockbuster – which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling – has passed The Super Mario Bros. Movie at the global box office, with Variety revealing on Saturday that the film has now brought in a total of $1.36 billion since its release in July.
It was revealed earlier this week that the smash hit movie has also become the highest grossing film in Warner Bros history.
The movie, starring Margo Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as her ‘boyfriend’ Ken, broke the record set by 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which earned $1.31 billion.
Barbie is also sure to get another boost in ticket sales when it’s released in IMAX September 22.
A smash hit! Barbie’ has become the highest-grossing movie of 2023 a month after it was released in cinemas
‘You can still wear pink after Labor Day,’ Warner Bros announced on the Barbie Movie Instagram account.
‘Coming to IMAX for one week only, starting September 22.’
‘Watch the biggest movie of the summer on the biggest screen, along with never before seen post-credit footage!’
That new new footage will be selected by director Greta Gerwig.
‘As a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy,’ the Oscar nominee said in a statement to Variety.
The news was good news for parent company Warner Bros Discovery whose stock finished up nearly four-percent.
Greta Gerwig’s movie was released on the same day as wartime dram Oppenheimer with the Christopher Nolan- directed epic becoming the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie in history this week.
Oppenheimer has now collected a reported $787 million at the box office, meaning that it has overtaken the record set by Ryan Reynolds’ 2018 hit Deadpool 2, which made $785 million and was also deemed unsuitable for those under the age of 17.
This means that the drama – which stars Cillian Murphy – is just behind Joker on the list of highest-grossing R-rated movies ever, which became the first movie of its kind to surpass the $1 billion mark following its release in 2019.
