Margot Robbie earned a Golden Globe Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Bombshell.
But things could have been very different for the 29-year-old from Dalby, Queensland, who got her start on Australian soap Neighbours from 2008-2011.
In an interview with Charlize Theron for V Magazine on Monday, Margot revealed she saw only ‘two options’ for her future while living Down Under – and how her refusal to ‘live a life of comfort’ was the key to her success.

‘[Option] one, stay on Neighbours. Many of my cast-mates on that show had worked there for 30 years and I could have had a very comfortable, nice life,’ Margot said of her fork in the road moment.
The actress explained that her other option was to try to make it big in America.
‘So I spent the next three years saving up and working on dialects, because I couldn’t do an [American] accent to save my life, and I went for door number two,’ she said.
Making the move: Her first option was to stay on Neighbours – but her refusal to live a comfortable life led to her taking ‘the second door’ and moving to America

The Birds Of Prey star spent the following three years saving for her big move and perfecting her American accent.
She landed her first major role alongside Leonardo Dicaprio in Wolf Of Wall Street, but after that success she began to be typecast as a ‘gold-digging wife’.
Once again, Margot refused to settle and became a student of the craft – constantly bugging Directors of Photography with questions about cameras and lenses.

Margot became a sponge, soaking up every piece of ‘business savvy’ advice she’d learn on-set of shows like Pan Am.
She applied her newfound wisdom soon after, forming production company LuckyChap Entertainment with her future husband, Tom Ackerley in 2014.
The company’s founding mandate was to tell empowering, female-led stories – a mandate that spawned the smash hit I, Tonya and effectively made Margot’s career.
