Two Indian dishes among world’s best puddings: Can you guess which ones?

Taste Atlas, an experiential travel guide, recently released the list of the 10 best puddings in the world. Two Indian puddings also made it to the list. Can you guess which ones?

Nothing spells comfort like a creamy, warm pudding. They are one of the easiest desserts to make and also the most satisfying. While puddings can be both sweet and savoury, each region has its own distinctive pudding — a perfect representation of their culinary heritage.

To honour the humble pudding, Taste Atlas, an experiential travel guide, recently released the list of the 10 best puddings in the world. Two Indian puddings also made it to the list. Can you guess which ones made the cut?

On the list, the traditional Phirni ranked 7th, while Kheer earned the 10th spot.

Taste Atlas described Phirni, a favourite in North India, as a dessert made with “ground rice that’s cooked in milk and flavored with almonds, saffron, and cardamom.” “It is most often prepared for special occasions or festivals such as Diwali and Karwa Chauth. Traditionally served in small clay bowls known as shikoras, phirni is always eaten well-chilled and garnished with nuts, rose petals, and often with silver paper or chandi warq to make it even more luxurious,” it said.

On the other hand, Kheer or payasam, the dessert that originated 2000 years ago in the Lord Jagannath Temple in Orissa, is a creamy rice pudding, which is made in several versions across the country, Taste Atlas noted. “It is a common dish at numerous Indian ceremonies, festivals, and celebrations, although it can be consumed any time of year. Kheer is made by boiling rice, wheat, or tapioca with milk and sugar, and it can be additionally flavored with dried fruits, nuts, cardamom, and saffron,” it added.
