Retired NBA Star Kevin Garnett Sells Malibu Estate for $20M

Retired NBA star Kevin Garnett has called it quits on building a dream home in Malibu, California.

The power forward who played 14 seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves put his half-built, hilltop mansion up for sale last week for $19.9 million. The house, still covered in construction scaffolding, spans 11,000 square feet and sits on seven acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Images show the bones of a multi-story, contemporary mansion behind a gated drive off the Pacific Coast Highway. The property has a large circular motor court, pool and expansive lawns.

It’s selling with active plans and permits already in place, and it offers the next owner the opportunity to put their own finishes on the project, according to the listing with agents Barbara Tenenbaum and Eric Hassan of Hilton & Hyland. The brokers did not immediately return a request for comment.

Mr. Garnett, 42, is parting with the property after 15 years—at least the last five of which were spent constructing a new house.

The former professional basketball player bought the estate in 2003 for $6.4 million, according to property records. At the time, it centered around a lavish Mediterranean-style villa with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, according to property records and old Google Earth images.

He razed much of the old house between five and six years ago, and began an extensive remodel that would raise the roofline, add a flat roof deck and gut much of the first and second floors, according to documents with the Malibu planning commission.

Mr. Garnett, who also previously played for the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets, still has a lavish home outside of Minneapolis, according to Variety, which first reported the Malibu listing.

Besides putting his unfinished house on the market for nearly $20 million, Mr. Garnett is also suing a Kentucky-based accountant for allegedly helping a wealth manager steal $77 million from him, it was reported last month. The accountant and firm have denied the allegations.

Mr. Garnett, who stands just shy of seven feet tall, retired from the Timberwolves in 2016. His lawyer did not immediately return a request for comment.
