The odds on Thomas Tuchel becoming the new manager of the England national team have shortened this Friday morning amid Manchester United simultaneously considering the German.

United first became interested in Tuchel, 51, this summer when Erik ten Hag’s future was, originally, in limbo. Ineos executives are understood to have met with the ex-Bayern Munich and Chelsea coach to chat about the prospect of him replacing Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

However, despite these initial discussions, the decision was made by the United boardroom to stick with Ten Hag. Fast forward to October and the Dutchman finds himself in trouble, once again, but The Manchester Evening News understands the former Ajax manager is safe in his role, for now.

Following the club’s worst start to the Premier League, ever, we reported that Tuchel was being lined-up by Ineos to replace Ten Hag if he was to be sacked. A ‘routine’ meeting was held on Tuesday in London where, among many topics, the United manager’s future was discussed.

Since that meeting, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos haven’t updated the situation surrounding their manager publicly, leading to assumptions Ten Hag has avoided the sack, yet again. In the meantime, Bet365 has installed Tuchel as their favourite to succeed Gareth Southgate in the England set-up.

Following Thursday night’s defeat to Greece, interim manager Lee Carsley informed the media that his briefing at senior level was to takeover the three England camps in September, October and November before handing over the job to a permanent replacement. He added that he hoped to be returning to the England U21s soon.
