Having Played with Ruben Amorim, I’m Determined to Secure My Place in His Manchester United Plans

Defender Victor Lindelof has said he has not thought too much about his future ahead of his Manchester United contract expiring at the end of the season.

United actively wanted to sell the Sweden international during the summer transfer window amid his contract situation. One source, at the time, said United were “trying hard” to offload the 30-year-old.

However, a toe injury he sustained towards the end of pre-season scuppered United’s chances of being able to offload him.

Since returning from injury, he has struggled to store minutes under his belt, making just seven appearances across all competitions so far this term. He last started in the Premier League back in March.

With his deal due to expire at the end of June, Lindelof is being heavily linked with an exit from Old Trafford. AC Milan have been linked with the prospect of securing his signature. However, the defender is trying to block out such speculation.

“This is not something I think about,” Lindelof admitted, speaking to Fotbolldirekt. “My focus has been to come back from the injury and play football again.

“But of course, there will be writings now what will happen when I am in my last year.”

The defender, who could start for Sweden when they host Slovakia in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday evening, currently has ambitions of trying to force his way into Ruben Amorim’s plans at Old Trafford.

“My goal is always to help the team,” added the defender. “Now I have come back, made 90 minutes at United which has been very nice. It’s a different situation for me now.”

Despite being nine years younger than Amorim, Lindelof once played with the new United head coach at Benfica, both starting a Taca de Portugal third round win over Cinfaes in October 2013. Amorim was the captain that day.

The Swede, addressing that experience, added: “I was young at the time, and we didn’t have a relationship outside of football, but I’ve heard great things about him as a coach. It will be great to meet him again. It’s been many years since we played together.”
