Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s Longtime Manhattan Penthouse Lists for $9.95 Million

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s longtime Manhattan penthouse is for sale for the first time in more than 40 years, hitting the market on Friday for $9.95 million.

The renowned Hollywood couple bought the Carnegie Hill apartment in the early 1980s as a pied-à-terre while maintaining a primary residence in nearby Westport, Connecticut, where Woodward, 94, still lives, according to the New York Times, who first reported the listing. Newman died in 2008 at age 83.

The couple often threw parties at the apartment, entertaining other celebrities and prominent guests, from Barack Obama to Cher, according to the Times.

The living room has Central Park views.

Information on what Newman and Woodward paid for the apartment was not readily available in public records.

Located on Fifth Avenue, the 15th-floor apartment overlooks the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park. It occupies half of the top floor of the co-op building, which was built in 1925 by James E.R. Carpenter, who was known for designing luxury high-rise apartments, many of which were on the Upper East Side.

Off the private elevator landing is the living room, featuring a wood-burning fireplace, a hidden bar and park views. Glass doors lead out onto one of the two terraces—the penthouse has more than 2,000 square feet of private outdoor space, according to the listing with Noble Black and Jennifer Kaufman Stillman of Douglas Elliman. They weren’t available for comment.

There are two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, with a large primary suite that leads to the second and larger terrace, which has city views to the north, east and south.

The home also has a formal dining room, a kitchen with a breakfast nook, a butler’s pantry and a laundry room.

The couple also bought a two-bedroom, ground-floor apartment—which Woodward still owns—to use as an office, gym and guest space, the Times reported. It also faces Central Park and is available for sale separately, the penthouse listing notes.

A representative for Woodward, who has retreated from public life since an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis in 2007, couldn’t be reached for comment.
