UFC star Dustin Poirier was blunt in his assessment of what would happen if he and three-time rival Conor McGregor came face-to-face.
Dustin Poirier is potentially weeks away from what he’s described as his UFC retirement fight after a long, decorated career inside the Octagon. While an opponent hasn’t been named for Poirier’s retirement fight, several intriguing options are in the mix, including potential rematches with Justin Gaethje and BMF titleholder Max Holloway.
As he plots his return to the Octagon after a loss at UFC 302, Poirier is reflecting on some of his all-time career moments in the cage. His trilogy with Conor McGregor, which abruptly ended due to a McGregor leg injury at UFC 264, is one of the first talking points that comes to mind when discussing Poirier’s fighting tenure.
Despite Poirier and McGregor’s rivalry hitting a cordial point at UFC 257, things quickly turned hostile ahead of their UFC 264 trilogy fight. The roller coaster of their rivalry is still talked about today, particularly amidst McGregor’s ongoing hiatus from fighting.
If Poirier and McGregor came face-to-face, don’t expect their interaction to include any respectful banter.
Dustin Poirier brutally honest about what would happen in a Conor McGregor run-in
In a recent interview with talkSPORT, Poirier was asked if he’d ever bury the hatchet with McGregor after their up-and-down history.
“No, of course not,” Poirier said. “We will fight to the death if I see him…I don’t respect him as a man.
“As an athlete and a fighter, he’s done some incredible things. He’s very gifted and is special in that way when it comes to combat, but as a human being? Nah.” (h/t talkSPORT)
Poirier’s anger comes from McGregor’s personal attacks before and after their UFC 264 trilogy fight. McGregor invoked Poirier’s wife and child into trash talk banter and threatened to kill Poirier in the cage.
A Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor tetralogy is likely off the table in the UFC
While Poirier and McGregor will likely never meet in the UFC Octagon again, they could potentially square off out of the cage in the future. McGregor, who hasn’t fought since UFC 264, has recently expressed interest in boxing fights with the likes of Logan and Jake Paul.
Poirier might entertain boxing matches after he retires from MMA following his expected retirement fight. During his long UFC career, he’s been considered as one of the top boxers in MMA.
Things between Poirier and McGregor will likely never move in a positive direction after their checkered past. If Poirier and McGregor run into each other at a future UFC event, the UFC might want to have plenty of security personnel in the area.
