Travis Kelce chuckles about disregarding Patrick Mahomes’ play calls, saying, “I’m just out here looking like a jerk.”

Mahomes and Kelce like to freestyle plays on the fly

Travis Kelce is the first person to admit that his habit of ignoring play calls from his quarterback Patrick Mahomes is, in his words, not how you play football.

But when it results in a huge third down conversion en route to a touchdown and eventually an AFC Championship win over the Baltimore Ravens, you earn the right to crack some jokes about it afterward.

Travis Kelce explains special connection with Mahomes

Travis joined Jason Kelce on the New Heights Podcast to break down the critical play, shedding light on his uncanny ability to improvise with Mahomes that has led them to being the QB-pass catcher duo with the most touchdowns in NFL playoff history.

“Big third down play and Pat changed the play,” Travis recalled. “I was like, ‘I don’t know if we should change this play.’ That’s not how you play football, ladies and gentlemen!

“And sure enough, he’s pump faking trying to find me coming over the middle of the field. He’s scrambling for his life, gets his legs chopped out from under him. At that point, I’m in my head like I gotta make a f*****g play for my guy. I’m just out here looking like an ass**** not running the right route for him,” the tight end continued.

“This is one of the things that makes you and Pat’s connection electric,” Jason added. “Because your guys’ ability to freelance. Both of you are so good at that.”

The school yard football style is one that few in the NFL can replicate, and fans are not the only ones who appreciate it.

“It makes playing with the guy so much f*****g fun, man,” said Travis.
