Ryan Gosling has weighed in on Barbie’s shock Oscars snub once again in a wide-ranging interview with Variety where he talked all things Ken.
The actor, who played Barbie’s plastic sidekick in the summer blockbuster, received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken – yet Margot Robbie, who played the eponymous Barbie, and director Greta Gerwig failed to receive individual nominations.
Gosling, 43, subsequently released a statement expressing his disappointment in their snubs, writing, ‘There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.’
Speaking with Variety, Gosling admitted he ‘heavily’ revised the statement.
‘Look, I heavily edited that statement,’ Ryan told the outlet. ‘I think if I say any more about it, I’m going to basically put on a mink and start challenging people to a beach-off on Malibu Beach.’

Gosling said the film has continued to spark dialogue from audience members: ‘In terms of people’s reactions, the film continues to provoke conversation in every incarnation,’ he said. ‘It keeps provoking this dialogue. It’s the power of this movie. I struggle to compare it to anything.’
‘But it’s yet another reason that proves it’s more than a summer blockbuster. It’s a great work of art. That’s what Greta and Margot created,’ he added.
After the reporter pointed out the Oscars snub could be a storyline straight out of the Barbies film, Ryan ‘sighs and stares straight ahead.’
Barbie received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, and Best Original Song for Ken’s existential track, I’m Just Ken.
As of yet, Gosling has not been approached by the Academy to perform the song at the upcoming ceremony – but is ‘open’ to the opportunity.
‘I still have not been asked,’ he said. ‘It might be too much of a risk to have me do it. I don’t know how that would work. But I’m open to it.’
Gosling called Ken the most challenging role he had yet to play and, to his surprise, compared it to his part in the 2010 drama Blue Valentine, which chronicled an ill-fated couple’s relationship.
‘It’s the hardest role I’ve ever had to play,’ Ryan said. ‘It was like a high-wire act—in tiny shorts and no shirt—with no net.
‘I wanted to make sure if I was going to do it—I was like, “I can’t mess this up. I can’t be the guy that messed up the Barbie movie. So if I’m going to do it, I have to do more than I know that I’m even capable of.’

Ryan took snaps from the Warner Brothers lot as part of his Variety shoot
‘In some way, everything I’ve done led to it. And I can’t believe I’m saying that. There were moments when I would do it where I’d think, ‘I haven’t felt like I’ve worked this hard since Blue Valentine.’
To his surprise, Ken was more difficult to channel than his role in Blue Valentine.
‘There were moments when I left Blue Valentine just completely emotionally spent, laying on the floor of the car on the ride home just done—empty. And it was even harder to play Ken. And I thought, “How am I feeling that on this film?”‘
Gosling first passed on the role, but both Gerwig and Robbie were insistent – Gerwig wrote the role for him and even had ‘Ken Ryan Gosling’ written in the script.
‘There were actual reasons why I couldn’t do the film. Schedule things. Life things. And I would call months later to my agents or something and say, “Hey, who did they get to play Ken?” And they would say, “Greta says it’s you.”…Eventually, I thought, “Who am I to argue with Greta Gerwig and Margot?” Gosling recalled.

Gosling ended up dying his hair after he was given a wig which didn’t fully capture his character
The star took four years off from acting to spend time with his family, telling the outlet he ‘didn’t want to miss anything’
‘They had a vision for it. They believed it. And they believed I should do it more than I believed I shouldn’t. At a certain point, I thought, “They see something that I don’t see.” I thought it was such a great part that anyone could play it. I understand now, but it took me a while.’
So dedicated to the role, Gosling dieted, spent hours a day exercising and even bleached his hair to properly transform into Ken.

‘I had this almost Redford wig, they called it. I looked at the screen test, and I thought it wasn’t Ken. I looked like I worked at Shutters or something. I thought, “Ken is Single White Female-ing Barbie.” So he would try to dye his hair, even though he can’t dye his hair. I thought, “I should bleach my hair, but it should be an off version of hers.” What was weird was I ended up looking like I did at 8 or 12, which was the era I was revisiting anyway.’
Outside of acting, Gosling shares two daughters with wife Eva Mendes – Esmeralda Amada, nine, and Amada Lee, seven.

‘My priorities changed, and I wanted to be with my kids. It’s going super fast. I hear the clock ticking. I don’t know how much time I’m going to get, and I don’t want to spend it in the wrong place. I know I’m not spending it in the wrong place if I’m with my family.’
