She didn’t quite make her red carpet entrance by enchanted bubble, but there’s no doubting that Ariana Grande took inspiration from her Wicked character Glinda the Good with her Oscars 2024 look on Sunday.
Grande stars alongside Cynthia Erivo in the upcoming two-part screen adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical, the good witch to Erivo’s “wicked” (misunderstood, also green) Elphaba, and the two used their red carpet looks as a bit of pre-promo, channeling their characters’ signature colors with their gowns.
Grande wore a candy-pink custom Giambattista Valli Haute Couture ruched column gown, accented by a voluminous piece that seemed to span the distance between cape, overskirt, and train, all in one. She completed the look with matching shoes, Tiffany & Co. jewelry, including pink jewels, and a bouncy blonde ponytail. She also, of course, has a forever accessory in the tattoo that she got to commemorate her time shooting Wicked.
Erivo opted for a deep green custom Louis Vuitton gown, complete with dramatic ruffles down the back that resolved into a train, and oversized puff shoulders for her own monochromatic, on-theme look. She layered on Roberto Coin jewelry.
In Vanity Fair’s exclusive first look at the movie, which is helmed by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, Grande said that the movie is about “a really selfless love and friendship” between Glinda and Elphaba. “They’re both each other’s first real friend, a person who accepts them for everything that they are.”
The first part of the two-part Wicked adaptation is due to hit theaters on November 27, with the second part coming a year later.
