The Auction of Muhammad Ali’s Remarkable Former Los Angeles Mansion

Bidding on Muhammad Ali’s former Los Angeles Italian Renaissance mansion will begin on Friday and the property will be put up for auction.

Concierge Auctions, in collaboration with Stefani Stolper and Kristen Lawson of The Beverly Hills Estates and June Ahn of Coldwell Banker Realty, is managing the online sale of the legendary mansion. The over-acentury-old residence, located in the city’s Hancock Park, was purchased by the late boxing legend in 1979. The deadline for bids is May 15.

The opulent mansion, which was created by renowned architect John C. Austin, who is responsible for notable local structures including the Griffith Observatory and L.A. City Hall, was inhabited by Ali and his family until 1984, according to property records. According to the auction house, he entertained Michael Jackson, Clint Eastwood, and Sylvester Stallone during his time there.

There are other well-known figures who have lived at the estate besides Ali. Concierge claims that former occupants include King C. Gillette, the founder of The Gillette Company, and A.P. Giannini, the founder of Bank of America.

The present owners, who were unavailable for comment, paid $2.5 million for the house in 2001, according to PropertyShark data.

“Even without its illustrious legacy as a home to business titans, statesmen, and sporting icons, [the house] would stand out for its exquisite design and amenities,” said Stolper in a news release. “This is a rare chance to own old-Hollywood glamor in the heart of one of Los Angeles’s most prized communities.”

Rich Hancock Park, built in the 1920s, is home to numerous exquisitely restored historic residences, including this one listed for $13.5 million.

Situated on 1.6 acres of park-like grounds, the 10,500-square-foot property is part of the gated community of Fremont Place, which is home to just 70 residences.

From its European-styled facade and Tiffany stained-glass windows, to the hand-carved crown moldings and imported Italian marble floors, the seven-bedroom home radiates grandeur and projects old-world charm, according to the release.

It boasts a grand foyer, a salon, a circular-shaped conservatory, a chef’s kitchen and a formal dining room.

A dramatic staircase leads upstairs, where, along with bedrooms, there’s two offices, a full-sized bar and a grand ballroom.

Outside, there’s a pool, gardens, pergola-dotted walkways and a separate 1,000-square-foot, one-bedroom guest house.
