“Bruno Fernandes Nears Cristiano Ronaldo’s Record as Manchester United Captain Secures Player of the Year Honors”

Bruno Fernandes has moved closer to a record held by Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea after being announced as Manchester United’s Player of the Year.

The Manchester United captain has been a shining light in the team this season, despite their struggles in the Premier League.

Fernandes scored 15 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils, one behind top scorer Rasmus Hojlund.

The Portuguese star also provided 12 assists and created the most chances of any player in the Premier League this season.

Fernandes’ performances led to 40 per cent of Man United fans voting him as the club’s Player of the Year.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the award three times in his first spell and one in his second at the club

The 29-year-old has received the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the third time in his Old Trafford career.

Fernandes had previously received the honour in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons.

He is only the third player to be crowned as the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, an award started in 1988, three or more times.

Fernandes moves one behind Ronaldo and De Gea, who have claimed the honour four times apiece.

Ronaldo won the award three times in his first spell at the club in 2004, 2007 and 2008, while he claimed the award in 2022 after his return.

De Gea won the award in three consecutive years between 2014 to 2016, before earning a then record fourth prize in 2018.

Diogo Dalot finished second in the voting behind Fernandes, with the full back receiving 20 per cent of the vote.

Dalot was named as Man United’s Players’ Player of the Year.

David de Gea has also won Manchester United’s Player of the Year award on four occasions

Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho finished third and fourth in the voting.

Man United endured a difficult season, recording their lowest Premier League finish by ending eighth in the table.

Erik ten Hag’s side will hope to end the season on a high in the FA Cup final on Saturday, but head into the match as clear underdogs against rivals Man City.

Victory would earn Man United qualification to next season’s Europa League, but the Red Devils would miss out on Europa entirely if they are beaten.
