Bayern Munich midfield mainstay Joshua Kimmich has been long-linked with a move to FC Barcelona. There were rumours of interest in the German international last summer, but finances prohibited the club from making a move.
Heading into the summer transfer window of 2024, Barça are still looking for a world-class pivot midfielder and links to Kimmich have surfaced again.
Given his contract at the Allianz Arena expires in 2025, he will be entering the final year of his deal in the summer, paving the way for Barcelona to try and snare him away from the Bavarian giants.
Liverpool, Man United enter race
However, Barcelona’s financial state would still make signing Kimmich from Bayern Munich a challenge, considering that his market value stands at €75 million.
On top of that, Sky Sports is now reporting that two Premier League heavyweights, Liverpool and Manchester United, have also shown an interest in signing Kimmich in the summer later this year.
Both the Premier League clubs can do with a quality addition to their ranks in the centre of the park and have seemingly identified the German international as their target.
It does come as a concern for Barça who were already staring at problems in their pursuit of Kimmich because of the club’s economic situation.
There are other options
Apart from Kimmich, Barcelona are looking at several other players to reinforce the pivot midfield position next summer.
Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad remains one of the main targets, although his €60 million release clause also presents a hurdle. A similar issue would pop up with Everton’s Amadou Onana.
Meanwhile, potential free agents such as Guido Rodriguez and Wilfred Ndidi have also been mentioned as potential options.
