Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler conspiracy theories ruled out after UFC 303 press conference cancelled

Veteran MMA journalist Ariel Helwani has assured fans that Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler is still going ahead.

McGregor is set to return to the Octagon after a three-year hiatus to face Chandler on June 29 in the UFC 303 main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

However, fans began to fear the fight would be cancelled after their launch press conference at Dublin’s 3Arena was postponed hours before it was set to take place.

“The UFC 303 press conference scheduled for Monday, June 3rd in Dublin, Ireland at 3Arena has been postponed until further notice,” began a statement from MMA’s premier promotion.

“We sincerely apologise to all the fans who were planning to attend. When we have further information on a new date and time, we will share it immediately.”

No reason was given for the postponement, leading supporters to jump to conclusions about what this meant for the fight itself.

But Helwani has since set the record straight during the latest episode of The MMA Hour on Monday night: “I could tell you right now with 100 per cent certainty, confirmed, 1000 per cent, that nothing with regards to any sort of legal issue, an incident of any kind, drama of any kind, criminal thing of any kind, fight of any kind, alcohol, none of that is at play here…

“There’s nothing regarding any sort of drug testing or anti-doping or anything like that.

“I can tell you that the press conference was postponed today due to an issue that has precluded it from happening and so the question now is, are they going to pick a new date?

“And of course on everyone’s mind, will this affect June 29? As of right this second, June 29 is still on.”

Shortly after the MMA Hour wrapped up, McGregor took to social media to apologise to his fans for the postponement of the press conference and insisted that the decision was out of his control.

“In consultation with the UFC, today’s press conference was cancelled due to a series of obstacles outside of our control,” he wrote.

“I apologise to my Irish fans, and fans around the world, for the inconvenience and appreciate all your passion and support.

“I can’t wait to put on the greatest all-time show in the Octagon.”

Chandler later broke his silence on the sudden cancellation by making reference to a quote from Martin Luther King.

“‘The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy,’ Martin Luther King Jr. #UFC303,” he tweeted.

“Walk On… See you at the top.”
