Creator of “For All Mankind,” Matt Wolpert, Pays $4.6 Million for a Historic Pasadena Home

Matt Wolpert, a seasoned Hollywood producer, has taken possession of a new home in Los Angeles. The co-creator of the Emmy-winning alt-universe space race drama For All Mankind on Apple TV+ has paid $4.6 million for a Spanish Colonial Revival-style home in a desirable Pasadena neighborhood. The home was last sold for just $815,000 in spring 1996. The show has just been renewed for a fifth season and is expanding with the spinoff series Star City.

Nestled amid a heavily wooded parcel of walled and gated land spanning nearly three-quarters of an acre, the two-story solid concrete and terracotta-roof structure was designed by renowned architects Sylvanus Martson and Edgar Maybury and built by Donald F. Harrison in the early 1930s at a reported cost of $20,000. A little over 4,400 square feet of well-maintained living area with wood-beam ceilings, Venetian plaster walls, archways, and parquet flooring accommodate five bedrooms and six bathrooms.

Highlights of the main floor include a double-flanked doorway that opens to an outdoor living area and a tiled central entry foyer with a Batchelder fireplace. Beneath a coved ceiling, a formal dining room with a yellow hue is adorned with French doors that lead to an enormous front patio. Meanwhile, the adjacent kitchen features modern stainless steel appliances, a butler’s pantry, and a breakfast area. On this floor, there is also an office.

Two distinct wings make up the upper level: one has a main suite with a fireplace, private patio, double baths, “ample closets,” and an extra bedroom that can double as an office. The second wing has two bedrooms, a full bathroom, a fireplace, and a patio. According to the description, a large basement makes enough for a large wine cellar or exercise facility.

The park-like grounds outside feature mature oak, acacia, and palm trees, a loggia that opens to a swimming pool surrounded by fountains, and several areas perfect for entertaining and relaxing al fresco. On the property are also a sizable motorcourt and an attached three-car garage.

In the past, Wolpert collaborated with Ben Nedivi on writing and producing duties for the network’s limited series American Crime Story: The People Vs. O.J. Simpson, the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, and the first three seasons of the FX anthology series Fargo. Apart from his recently purchased Pasadena property, he also owns a 1930s-era house in Tujunga, north of Los Angeles, which he paid $1.2 million for in 2018.

George Penner of Compass handled the listing, while Compass representatives Juan Longfellow and Louise Leach represented the purchase.
