Marcus Rashford’s brother has dig at Gareth Southgate over Man United star’s Euro 2024 exclusion

Marcus Rashford was omitted from the England squad for Euro 2024

Marcus Rashford’s brother has reignited the debate over the Manchester United star’s omission from England’s Euro 2024 squad with a thinly-veiled dig at Gareth Southgate. The Three Lions laboured to a 1-1 draw over Denmark on Thursday.

Rashford suffered a difficult campaign with United in the season just finished. The forward scored just seven Premier League goals and contributed two assists as the Red Devils struggled to an eighth-placed finish.

More than just the statistics, though, Rashford looked a shadow of the player who the previous campaign had blasted 30 goals, playing with a swagger and verve under Erik ten Hag. Instead, the striker looked lethargic and many fans and pundits questioned his workrate and happiness.

As a result of his lack of form, Southgate made the decision to axe the striker from his Euro 2024 plans. Instead, he opted to go with players relatively untested at international level but who were in better club form, like Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze.

“These are of course difficult calls,” Southgate said. “You are talking about very good players who have been important in what we’ve done over a number of years.

“With Marcus, I just feel that other players in that area of the pitch had better seasons. It’s as simple as that.”

Rashford reacted to his England snub on social media, writing on his Instagram story: “Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament.”

However, after another poor display from England saw them forced to settle for a point, having failed to impress at Euro 2024 thus far, Rashford’s agent and brother Dwaine Maynard appeared to criticise Southgate’s decision to overlook the forward with the Three Lions lacking impetus in attack.
