Conor McGregor places eye-watering bet on Lionel Messi and Argentina with Cristiano Ronaldo bet set to fail

Conor McGregor has put his money where his mouth yet again by lumping on Lionel Messi to win the Copa America with Argentina.

The UFC superstar has already gone big with his bets on sporting events this summer by putting an excessive amount on Cristiano Ronaldo to finish as top scorer of Euro 2024.

But, having missed a penalty against Slovenia in the last 16, that particular flutter looks almost certain to fail with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner yet to score a single goal.

McGregor will have high hopes that his latest wager will come through, though, betting a cool £365,000 on Argentina to win Copa America this summer.

If Messi does lift the trophy on July 14, the Irishman will be getting his jig on as it would see him reap over £1million in winnings.

Argentina are the clear favourites to win the continental competition ahead of Brazil and Uruguay and topped their group with three wins out of three.

Having won the World Cup in Qatar two years ago, the Albiceleste remain arguably the best team on the planet and McGregor might consider his bet a banker.

It would see him win back his potential losses on Ronaldo, having slammed £60,000 on the former Manchester United star to take him the Golden Boot.

Captioning his post, he stated: “60 G’s on Cristiano to retain his Euro Golden Boot. Siuuu!”

At the start of Euro 2024, the Portugal international was 14/1 to take home the accolade – not bad odds considering he bagged the award three years ago at Euro 2020 with five goals.

But Roberto Martinez’s side have been lacking some cutting edge in front of goal while Ronaldo has had 17 shots so far – more than anyone else.

However, the Al Nassr ace has not scored yet – even missing a rare penalty against Slovenia that Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak saved expertly.

Ronaldo did exact revenge though in the penalty shootout as he dispatched his spot-kick to get Portugal up and running as they knocked Slovenia out.

While the 39-year-old has yet to net this tournament, he still remains the top goalscorer in European Championship history, ahead of Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski.
