Scarlett Johansson recently had an interview with Vanity Fair to discuss her new skincare line, The Outset. During the interview, the conversation landed on how women’s bodies are so scrutinized, especially during pregnancy. When asked about what her experience from being pregnant with Cosmo – who she shares with Colin Jost – was like, Johansson stated,“I ’ve been so protective of both pregnancies, not wanting to feel scrutinized in the public eye. I wanted to be able to have my own feelings about my changing body without other people also telling me how they saw me, whether it was positive or negative. I realized when I was pregnant with my son, it’s funny how much stuff people put on you when you’re pregnant—their hopes or their judgment or their desire, a lot of that is put on pregnant women.”
Johansson stated that while she was excited to be pregnant, she also had “not-great feelings about it.” She continued that this feeling would be scrutinized by women close to her.
“I would have a lot of people saying things to me immediately, like, ‘How great, oh my God, that’s wonderful.’ And while I was definitely excited to be pregnant in some ways, I also had a lot of not-great feelings about it, and that would be scrutinized by—I’m talking about, like, women that were close to me. You expect it from men, but from women, it’s like, ‘Come on, girl, you’ve been through it.’”
She then praised one of her friends for reacting in a more realistic way. Johansson stated, “When I told her I was pregnant- she knew I was trying to get pregnant – she was just like, ‘Oh sh*t. Great, but not great.’ And I was like, ‘You’re a true friend.’” After recalling the conversation with a laugh, she stated that while women empowerment has moved forward, this part of pregnancy was still in the Dark Ages.Scarlett Johansson on Managing Work and FamilyScarlett Johansson with her daughter
When asked how she plans on balancing her career with a new baby, Johansson got candid about how she now feels it’s okay to ask for help. The Black Widow actress stated that she has a lot on her plate, however, she is also “used to having a lot of balls in the air.” She continued,
“I think I’m finally okay with letting other people help me keep the balls up. I haven’t always been that way. I’m getting to a place in my life where I’m okay with letting other people in, with asking for help—because I have projects that I want to work on as an actor, and they’re very consuming.”
Well, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking for some help when you are in need of it. It cannot be easy for her to manage her family, her acting career, her production company, and now a whole new skincare line. Kudos to Johansson!
