It’s the first time he has been in Oscar contention since 1977 when Rocky, which he starred in, wrote and produced, was nominated for 10 statuettes and won three, including Best Picture and Best Director for John G. Avildsen.
Sly missed out on the Best Actor and Screenplay honours, which appears to be making this round of honours doubly sweet.
‘For somewhat of a borderline misanthrope, this is incredible,’ the celebrity told The New York Times last week. ‘It’s the pinnacle of my life, professionally. It’s so miraculous.’

In the film, Sylvester plays an ageing Rocky, who comes out of retirement to train promising young boxer Adonis Johnson, played by Michael B. Jordan, who is the son of his former rival, Apollo Creed.
The Oscars will take place on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
For the Best Supporting Actor category, Sly is up against Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight), Tom Hardy (The Revenant), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and Christian Bale (The Big Short).
