Bruno Fernandes sent a message after Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring return to Old Trafford for Manchester United.

The former Reds striker featured for the United Legends in the charity match against Celtic at Old Trafford on Saturday. The United team led by club icon Bryan Robson were held to a 1-1 draw before the side representing the Scottish Premiership club claimed a 5-4 victory in the subsequent penalty shootout.

Rooney was one of several former United stars in the team for the charity match, which helped raise funds for the Manchester United Foundation. The Plymouth Argyle manager was joined by the likes of Antonio Valencia, Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov and current United first-team coach Darren Fletcher in the game.

Rooney scored the only goal of the game for the United Legends, finding the top corner from a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. Gary Hooper scored for Celtic Legends, who were managed by former Premier League manager Paul Lambert.

United posted a video of Rooney’s goal in their Instagram stories, and Fernandes went on to send a message via the same social media outlet. Captioning the video, the United captain included a GIF of Antony Starr’s character from The Boys TV series, which sees the character, named Homelander, saying: “Perfect.”

Fernandes is currently on international duty with Portugal and could feature in their Nations League match against Scotland on Sunday evening. The United captain already played the full 90 minutes in the win over Croatia on Thursday night and will be looking to be involved when the Reds return to Premier League action against Southampton next Saturday.

Rooney explained after the game why it meant a lot to him to score in an important fixture that raises money for the local community.

“It was special to be back at Old Trafford today for the Legends game, and it is all for such a good cause,” Rooney told United’s club website. “It was great to play here again.

“Manchester United Foundation is doing a great job and being involved for a long time, seeing the work it does first-hand, any time we can give to try to help, it’s always great to do that. It’s a great cause.

“It is important that we continue to do what we can, when we can, to support the Foundation and continue to put smiles on children’s faces.”
