Simone Inzaghi is reportedly being considered as a potential successor for the Manchester United managerial role if Erik ten Hag is dismissed.

Ten Hag’s position is under scrutiny following a devastating 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham on Sunday. United are set to play Porto in the Europa League on Thursday, followed by a match against Aston Villa. Ten Hag is under pressure to secure some positive outcomes to halt his team’s concerning decline.

United have only managed two victories in their last seven matches across all competitions, leaving them in 12th place in the Premier League, just four points clear of the relegation zone.

Despite the team’s poor performance, Ratcliffe is hesitant to dismiss Ten Hag, having extended his contract earlier this year. He plans to consult with fellow owners the Glazers, sporting director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Omar Berrada before making a decision.

However, Ratcliffe recognises that United are stagnating under Ten Hag’s leadership and would consider Inzaghi and Gareth Southgate as potential replacements, according to the Daily Star. Southgate has many supporters at United and shares a close friendship with Ashworth.

Inzaghi has also caught the attention of United’s management due to his successful tenure at Inter Milan since 2021. During his time there, Inzaghi has led the team to five trophy wins, including the Serie A title last season.

The Italian, who guided Inter to their first Champions League final in 13 years in 2023, only to lose 1-0 to Manchester City in Istanbul, has built a reputation for making his teams difficult to beat. However, should he take the reins at United, he would be expected to adopt a more attacking approach.

The 48-year-old recently renewed his contract with Inter, and it is yet to be determined whether he could be enticed to undertake the task of restoring United’s winning ways. It is said that United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe will evaluate Ten Hag’s role during the next international break.
