The Yellowhead Jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons) captivates with its presence on Caribbean coral reefs. But it’s the fish’s reproductive process that truly sets it apart, showcasing remarkable parental care.
When a female Yellowhead Jawfish is ready to lay eggs, she releases them into the waiting mouth of the male. The male then fertilizes the eggs and takes on the sole responsibility of protecting them. For about 7 to 9 days, he carries the precious cargo within his mouth, forgoing his own feeding to ensure their safety. His burrow becomes a haven for the developing embryos.
