The towering Le Morne Brabant, a magnificent basaltic rock rising 556 meters (1,824 ft) above sea level, dominates the skyline. UNESCO has designated the entire region—known as the Le Morne Cultural Landscape—as a World Heritage Site.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, fugitive slaves found refuge on the remote and difficult cliffs at Le Morne Brabant. In search of safety and independence, these brave people established tiny communities in the caverns and atop the rocky mountain. Le Morne is now a representation of the slaves’ struggle for freedom, tenacity, and sacrifices thanks to the oral traditions and tales connected to the “maroons.” Due to the enormous number of fugitive slaves who sought refuge on the mountain, Mauritius gained the nickname “Maroon republic” since it was a major player in the eastern slave trade.
