Conor McGregor is said to be worth a cool €300 million and the flash UFC star loves boasting about his wealth.
But what is also true is that the Irishman came from humble beginnings and used to be a plumbing apprentice before achieving his dreams in MMA.
He was born in 1988 and was raised in Crumlin, Dublin, to parents Tony and Margaret McGregor, who also have two daughters, Erin and Aoife.
As we know, McGregor went on to achieve great things in combat sports, but in recent times his reputation was shattered in Ireland. This was after a jury ruled he assaulted a woman in a civil rape case.
During the trial, the wider public was introduced to his parents, with Tony being by his side every day of the 12-day case in the High Court. And when the verdict was read out, his mum held him tight as the fighter doubled over and shook his head.
With this in mind, below we look inside the lives of his parents who in recent weeks have shown they will stick by their son no matter what.
Who are Tony and Margaret?
Tony actually has roots in Liverpool and his father was in the British Navy – but he came to Ireland when his family life fell apart after his mum cheated on his dad.
As a young teenager, he found work in a launderette, and that is where he met and fell in love with Margaret.
Tony and Margaret are childhood sweethearts who have three children aged between 36 and 43
Aoife McGregor, one of McGregor’s older sisters, once told the Irish Independent: “My parents were extremely hard workers. My dad was a taxi driver.
“They met when they were like 13 or 14 when they were working in a launderette just off Baggot Street. They met when they were folding sheets. Folding sheets was apparently the thing to do.”
Tony went on to be a taxi driver for 26 years before getting into social work while Margaret was a homemaker.
Aoife also said her glamorous mother inspired her love of beauty and make-up, saying: “My mam is so glam. She is really into make-up. I always remember, as a little girl – before gel nails and acrylic nails – every Friday night, before my mother went out for a few drinks with my dad, she would sit and put her nails on.”
She also said her dad always presented himself well too, adding: “He loves his old three-piece suits. At every family party, all my uncles would rock in with their jeans and their shirts, and I guarantee that Tony would have a three-piece suit.”Family Life
Tony and Margaret raised their three children in Crumlin where they used to take McGregor, a Manchester United fan, to football training.
The father and son share a close relationship
But one day, the young lad walked into Crumlin Boxing Club. Coach Phil Sutcliffe remembered: “Conor came in wearing muddy football boots, so we gave him a right telling off. He asked to join and we told him to get some forms from the office for his parents, who were outside. Instead of doing that, he started punching a bag. He still hadn’t taken off the boots so we roared at him.
“That was the Friday. He came back on the Saturday and almost every day for the next seven years.”
Tony has admitted that he had doubts about McGregor’s ambitions of becoming a professional MMA fighter.
Speaking to BT Sport, he said: “He got it right. It’s not often that a father would admit that, but my son was right and I was wrong. I knew then, he had a career.”
Margaret was also sceptical and McGregor once said: “They said, ‘Who else has done it?’ There was no one before me.
“I remember saying, ‘At 25 years of age I will be a self-made millionaire’. My father laughed at me. I was a year late, but I did it.”
McGregor’s relationship with parents
McGregor is close to both his mum and dad and he has not been shy about vocalising this to his millions of fans on social media.
Tony has followed his son all over the world to support his martial arts career
Earlier this year, Tony suffered a heart attack, and McGregor showed his support by writing on social media: “We are McGregors we live forever.”
But despite accumulating unbelievable wealth and raising four kids of his own, McGregor was still admonished by his own authoritative father one day in court last month.
As reported by Mark Tighe who wrote in the Sunday World: “One morning, he opened a video that emitted a loud noise. This prompted his father to snatch the phone from him with a quick admonishment before turning the device off and placing it safely in his own pocket.
“Each morning after that, McGregor would give his father his phone before the jury took their seats. It appeared he did not want them to catch him looking distracted.”
Conor McGregor celebrating his 34th birthday with his mum
McGregor has a special bond with his mum too, and last year he shared a picture of the pair of them drinking wine. He captioned it: “My mother raised me to stand by what is right, and to call out what is wrong.”
And wishing her a happy birthday one year, he wrote: “Happy birthday to my mother Margaret! Love you Ma.”
