Manchester United’s next transfer might replicate Chelsea’s £40 million masterstroke.

Xavi Simons celebrates with teammates after scoring

Manchester United have been linked with a move for PSG star Xavi Simons, after his impressive loan spell with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Simons, who also starred for the Netherlands during their run to the semi-finals of EURO 2024, is said to be available for transfer this summer as he prepares for a future away from the Parc des Princes.

The Mirror reported on Sunday that United boss Erik ten Hag was weighing up whether to target another Dutch star after securing the transfer of Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee and targeting a move for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs De Ligt.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano added that United and Newcastle have asked PSG about his availability but the two clubs are behind RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich in the race to sign the 21-year-old.

Ten Hag publicly praised Simons’ performance in the Netherlands’ EURO 2024 semi-final loss to England, too, making Simons well aware of his interest.

“I enjoyed Xavi in that game [against England] – the drive he has, the passion with which he conquers balls and recognises situations are top,” Ten Hag said.

“His huge drive is almost un-Dutch. You can see that he was trained abroad. He has a southern European doggedness.”

Simons enjoyed an excellent season in Germany, scoring 10 goals and grabbing 15 assists for Leipzig in all competitions and he would add a guarantee of goals to United’s attacking midfield options.

Interestingly, using Macro Football’s player impact tool, which uses analytics to understand a player’s seasonal impact to see which players in European football’s top five leagues are most similar to Simons’ characteristics, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer is the top match with a 97.3% similarity rating.

Palmer made an incredible impact at Chelsea in his first season at the club following his £40million move from Man City last summer, scoring 27 goals and grabbing 15 assists in all competitions.

His contribution helped steer Chelsea back into Europe with a sixth placed finish and he is now the focal point which new Blues head coach Enzo Maresca will build his team around next term.

Luis Muriel (Atalanta), Matteo Politano (Napoli), Michael Olise (Bayern Munich) and Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) also ranked in the top five in terms of similarity to Simons, further showing his quality.

But if he was to join United and make a similar impact as Palmer did at Chelsea last term, the arrival of Simons could well prove to be the catalyst to help inspire Ten Hag’s side back into the Champions League places.
